The carpet-treadmill zombie games and intimidating space submarines of GDC’s Alt.Ctrl - rasmussenalwainter45

Tailor-made controls. It's the aspect of arcade cabinets I miss most. Trusted, I lie with why home gaming gravitated towards mouse/keyboard and gamepads—jack of all trades, master of none. We can doh jolly more than anything with a keyboard, without the need for a closet full of one-time-use peripherals and landfills packed with impressionable trash.
There's something fascinating almost fully custom control interfaces though: The dual "root beer" lights-out of Wiretapper, the oversized yoke of Atari's Adept Wars, Battlezone's control stick armored combat vehicle controls, the iconic Rock-and-roll Band guitar. Look upon them as gaming's hesitate maker, lacking in versatility but excellent at fulfilling a single purpose.
And that's what makes GDC's Altitude.Ctrl exhibit so untold fun per annum. Drawing on the colonnade custom, Alt.Ctrl shows off games with fully-custom controls, be IT a carpet-treadmill you drag out to pull a zombie forward, an all-embracing spaceship cockpit complete with powered fan, an emotion-detection AI looking at to capture rogue humans, or a game played aside scratching a record.
There's also some kinda crazy…cat-matter?
We took a quickly tour through the fourth annual Alt.Ctrl last week during GDC, trying to showcase some of the best ideas on exhibit. They may be totally crazy for your living room, and even (in many cases) impractical for an arcade, but it sure is more interesting than the ol' mouse and keyboard combo.
